# Beyond agent mania – The architecture shift reshaping the telco industry. 3GPP's push toward an AI-native 6G standard signals that autonomous, intelligent networks are central to the next evolution. The first 6G finalized release is a few years away, so instead of waiting, the industry is actively embracing AI agent technology as an alternative control plane to layer autonomous capabilities onto existing infrastructure. Yet, across most implementations, a multi-layered architecture is emerging that spans from the data substrate to the top-level business and user intent, adding an agent orchestration layer between. The aim is to enable autonomous agent processes and collaboration, not only across the RAN and core, but throughout cross-domain telco operations. The tactical repurposing of the O-RAN Alliance's R1 interface as a unified bus for both RAN and core is a pragmatic bridge, leveraging an existing standard to enable converged data layers and cross-domain agent collaboration the industry is targeting for 6G, without waiting for 3GPP to finalize it.

Last month, it allocated $3.2 million in grants to projects across four organizations; most recently (last week) it launched an open-source AI chatbot at the AI for Good Summit in Geneva. “And with English driving the largest language models and AI systems, a bulk of the world’s languages and, consequently, cultures and communities are left behind,” Bdeir said.
